Knowledge about bearing lubrication

Anyone who often uses bearings will know that there are two types of lubrication for bearings: lubricating oil and grease. Lubricating oil and grease play a very important role in the use of bearings. Some users may wonder, can oil and grease be used to lubricate bearings indefinitely? When should the lubricant be changed? How much grease should be added? These issues are a complex issue in bearing maintenance technology.

One thing for sure is that lubricating oil and grease cannot be used permanently, because excessive use of lubricating grease is very harmful to the bearing. Let’s take a look at three points for attention in the use of lubricating oil and grease for bearings:

1.Lubricating oil and grease have good adhesion, wear resistance, temperature resistance, rust resistance and lubricity to bearings, can improve high temperature oxidation resistance, delay aging, dissolve carbon accumulation, and prevent metal debris and oil Product, improve mechanical wear resistance, pressure resistance and corrosion resistance.

2. The more lubricating grease is filled, the greater the friction torque will be. Under the same filling amount, the friction torque of sealed bearings is greater than that of open bearings. When the grease filling amount is 60% of the internal space volume of the bearing, the friction torque will not increase significantly. Most of the lubricating grease in open bearings can be squeezed out, and the lubricating grease in sealed bearings will leak due to friction torque heating.

3. With the increase of the filling amount of lubricating grease, the temperature rise of the bearing rises linearly, and the temperature rise of the sealed bearing is higher than that of the open bearing. The filling amount of lubricating grease for sealed rolling bearings shall not exceed about 50% of the internal space.

The lubrication schedule for bearings is based on time. Equipment suppliers develop lubrication schedules based on operating hours. In addition, the equipment supplier guides the amount of lubricant added during the maintenance planning process. It is common for equipment users to change the lubricating oil in a short period of time, and avoid adding too much lubricating oil.
